Who We Are
Home Delivered Meals
A priority for the Friends of Aging, a free hot lunch is delivered to homebound seniors by caring volunteers. If you or a loved one over 60 years old needs help, please contact Mary Kurek at 252-247-2626 or mary.kurek@carteretcountync.gov.
Home Access Program
This unique service uses simple technology to connect homebound seniors to activities at the Leon Mann, Jr. Enrichment Center. Seniors are taught how to use Skype or video conferencing software on a tablet or desktop computer to connect to the Center. This allows them to see friends and participate in activities via live-streaming video that they ordinarily wouldn’t be able to travel to. For more information about the program contact, Mary Kurek at 252-247-2626 or mary.kurek@carteretcountync.gov.
Friendly Visits
Our Friendly Visits are one of our favorite services to set up. We coordinate volunteers to make personal visits to homebound seniors. This is a socialization opportunity for those unable to leave home, and a way for us to check up on them to make sure they are doing well and that all of their needs are being met. We’ll do just about anything to brighten up your day.
What We Do
The Friends of Aging is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization. All donations are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law.
In a recent study by AARP, 90% of all seniors want to stay in their own homes as they age, often referred to as “aging-in-place.” Even if they begin to need day-to-day assistance or ongoing health care during retirement, most (82%) would prefer to stay in their homes. U.S. Census data shows Carteret County will have the 6th highest median age in the state by 2016. Demand for programs and services that extend wellness and aging-in-place have never been higher. However, federal and state funding designated for programs like home-delivered meals or transportation that help seniors achieve independence has been consistently reduced to the point of breaking. That’s why the Friends of Aging was formed, ensuring that those who have spent years contributing to our todays are not denied quality of life in the future.
The Friends of Aging collaborates with the Carteret County Department of Aging and the Leon Mann, Jr. Enrichment Center, located in Morehead City. With this partnership, we are able to maximize important services to older adults in Atlantic Beach, Beaufort, Cape Carteret, Newport and all surrounding municipalities of Carteret County.
We’re working to relieve the distress of seniors in need by supporting in-home services, wellness programs, and community connectivity. We champion specialized activities and counseling on primary needs such as nutrition, healthcare, housing, financial security, education, and employment. Carteret County Friends of Aging was founded in August of 2013 by Janet Grainge, Mary Kurek, and Ted Goetzinger.
