Who We Are

Craven Literacy Council and our specially trained volunteer tutors provide free, confidential, individualized tutoring services to adults of Craven, Jones and Pamlico counties. We offer instruction in:

  • Adult basic literacy
  • English as a Second Language for non-native speakers of English
  • Computer and internet use

Adults with low literacy skills do not have the full range of economic, employment, social and personal choices which are available to people with higher levels of literacy. To improve literacy of area adults, Craven Literacy Council:

  • Provides free one-on-one and small group literacy instruction to adults
  • Develops individualized curriculum based on each student's abilities and goals
  • Conducts new tutor training workshops leading to ProLiteracy certification for tutors
  • Offers continuing education to tutors and students through mentoring, training and computer labs
  • Advocates to increase public awareness of literacy through community events

What We Do

Since 1986 Craven Literacy Council has been changing lives of families in Craven, Jones, and Pamlico counties by providing adults with a place to establish and enhance basic reading, writing and computing skills. Our vision is that all members of our community will have the literacy skills they need to achieve their full potential as individuals, workers, parents and citizens.

Perhaps our most important outcomes are the everyday success stories. The excitement over reading a story to a child for the first time or deciphering instructions at work without assistance, or the triumph in ESL students’ eyes when they have successfully negotiated their children’s parent/teacher conferences or attained citizenship are just a few of the accomplishments students and tutors share.
